Dahlia Planting Tips & Tricks

HERE WE GO! We are finally planting out our dahlias, how on earth is it November already! Anyhoo, we usually aim to get our tubers in the ground the first week of November but we are always guided by the weather because you really don’t want your tubers getting lots of rain on them while they don’t have a root system. This will likely cause them to rot.

The bulk of our Dahlias, our Cafe au Lait’s, get planted en masse (all 100 and something of them) at the same time each year to help with bloom predictability as we use them as a backdrop for our Elopements & Location Shoots.

This will be our 5th season growing dahlias and we have learnt so much over the years. So I’ve written a quick how to guide for you to give them a go!

TIPS & TRICKS

First up- Soil prep is vital we use @livingafarmaus compost to feed all the microscopic critters in the soil that will in turn feed our Dahlias

Secondly- Check The weather forecast. Plan to plant your tubers so they will have a week of no rain, to avoid the dreaded ROT!

Thirdly- Install any stakes or supports before planting to prevent damaging your tubers

Then- Make sure you plant your tubers roughly 10-15cm deep as this will also help anchor them.

Lastly- Generally we don’t water them until there is 5cm of greenery above ground.

I hope this gives you the confidence to give dahlias a go, they are such a rewarding cut flower to grow!

BE WARNED THOUGH, THEY ARE ADDICTIVE!
